Trade Show Help & Advice
Trade Show, Public Show, Exhibition or Road Show?
Trade Shows
Trade Shows are strictly business to business and exclude the public.
So if you are a manufacturer, wholesaler or importer and you sell to other businesses then Trade Shows are for you.
Trade Shows are further divided into local, regional, national and international events. Pick the event(s) that your customers and prospects attend.
To find out about shows that may be suitable for you, check you local chamber of trade, public libraries, trade associations and magazines and the directory on this site.
You’ll not be selling stock from your stand so you can get away with a smaller stand than you would need at a public show. Which is just as well because you will probably be paying a higher rate. This is because trade shows are generally of a higher standard of decor and features, to better reflect the nature of the event and to show the industry in the best possible light.
There is also less (or no) revenue from visitors to contribute towards the organizers overheads.
Public Shows
Like the trade shows these vary in size from small, local or regional shows up to international shows at the major venues.
Usually at public shows you can sell your products to visitors directly off your stand. This can help you recoup some of your costs but is this your main reason for being at the show?
A long term approach would be to collect the contact details of everyone who shows an interest in your products. You then have a database of people who you know are predisposed to buy your products, who can become your regular customer for many years.

It’s worthwhile asking the organizers if you can have the full list of visitors to the show to add to your mailing list. Keep these separate from those that visited your stand.
